Foundation Instructor (Math & Science Programs) – University of Calgary in Qatar

The University of Calgary in Qatar has an opening for a Foundations Instructor for a one-year contract, renewable upon mutual agreement.

The successful candidate should be able to start teaching in August 2016.

Reporting to the Director, Academic Development and Support, the Foundation Program Instructor, supports students and faculty in the Bachelor of Nursing programs through classroom teaching, tutorial assistance and workshops as required. The ideal candidate should have experience teaching Math and Science subjects, specifically Biology and/or Chemistry.

The nature of this position is very similar to that of a high school instructor in Canada with the requisite planning, instruction and evaluation of students. The added complexity of working with students whose first language is not English will affect each aspect of the job.

All subjects may be taught in module format to allow students to progress through their deficit areas at a faster pace. As such instructors in all subjects must be prepared for a progression of students with varying numbers in their classroom. Instructors must also be prepared to teach various modules at the same time.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

1. Participate in the development and modification of curriculum to ensure that the essential components of high school biology, chemistry and/or mathematics are being covered in the Foundation Program. To achieve this it will be necessary to liaise with members of Faculty of Nursing.

2. Ensure students have the prerequisite knowledge and skills necessary to be successful after entering the Bachelor of Nursing Program at UCQ. To achieve this outcome some or all the following must be carried out depending on the particular needs of individual students:

• Assessing students level of understanding and knowledge in critical areas and making determinations on what particular concepts must be covered on an individual basis;

• Modifying curriculum or instructional practices to accommodate the particular needs and abilities of students.

• Taking into account the fact that English is not the first language of students but it will be the language of instruction.

• Preparing lessons on, teaching and evaluating the critical components of high school level biology, chemistry or math.

• Providing students practical experience and knowledge by working in laboratory conditions carrying out scientific investigations.

• Assisting in the formation of both short and long term timetables of instruction for students in the Foundation Program.

3. Provide academic assistance to Foundation and Bachelor of Nursing students who are experiencing difficulties in learning math, chemistry or biology fundamentals.
